Abdul-Washeru Alhassan
Class of 2022
Washeru is from Ghana and matriculates in the GHD program with six years of professional experience in research, extension, international business consulting, social entrepreneurship and volunteering. He spent two years working as a research associate at the University of Ghana School of Public Health on international development projects including environmental health and air pollution, and maternal and child health. During this time, he witnessed the social and environmental iniquities persistent in Ghana’s largest slum and was inspired to co-found a local non-profit and youth policy advocacy organization that implements education and environmental justice projects in the area. Since 2015, Washeru has served as Founder/Project Manager of a start-up consulting firm in Ghana where he consults for international testing and certification companies in the areas of regulatory compliance, certification, standards, and health and safety for markets access in the telecommunications sector in Ghana and other African countries. More recently, he has consulted in the human resources and healthcare sectors. He has volunteered for NGOs including Plant-for-the-Planet, Childlift Aid Foundation, and others.
Washeru was one of the top 25 recipients of the 2014 Agribiz4Africa Syngenta Foundation/ENACTUS Kenya Seed Grant Award and was selected twice as a finalist in Ghana for the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. He holds a master’s degree in Climate Change and Sustainable Development and an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology both from the University of Ghana. At Georgetown, he hopes to build his expertise around science/technology, social innovation, international diplomacy, and global energy policy. He is fluent in English and Hausa and hopes to gain full proficiency in French and/or Arabic while at Georgetown.
