Title: Welcoming GHD’s Newest Associate Professor

GHD welcomes its newest Associate Professor of the Practice of Development, Dr. Ekin Birol. Dr. Birol is no stranger to GHD. She previously served as an adjunct professor, Capstone Advisor, and Global Social Innovation Lab mentor for 2 years at GHD.

“I am honored to have this opportunity to serve GHD students. Their optimism, curiosity and passion for development are contagious. I look forward to supporting and witnessing their journeys to becoming well rounded development professionals.”

Dr. Birol received her PhD in Economics and has been working for international organizations tackling global issues such as food security (CGIAR) and climate change (World Resources Institute). Dr. Birol has conducted research at the intersection of economic development, agriculture, health, climate change and the environment and published extensively in peer reviewed journals. She also has experience doing fieldwork in many regions of the world, from Mekong Delta to East Africa; from South Asia to Central America; from eastern and southern Europe to West Africa.

In her new position, Dr. Birol will serve as the Director of the Graduate Certificate in Social Innovation and Global Development, and will oversee the Capstone project and Washington D.C. internship processes for the GHD program. She will also teach GHDP 5013 Economics of Development: Poverty Alleviation in the Spring.
