John “Jack” Borkowski earned his BA in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland at College Park with a minor in Philosophy. For his senior thesis, he researched monitoring and evaluation methods for U.S. cross-cultural programs in Ukraine with a focus on student exchange. His research interests and volunteer experience as a group conversation leader in his university’s ESL program led him to apply to Peace Corps upon completion of his studies. Jack spent the last two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in a rural Ukrainian village. As TEFL Methodology Trainer, Jack provided technical assistance to English teachers enabling them to implement more interactive teaching strategies in their classrooms. Through successful PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) grant applications, Jack also supported families affected by HIV through the provision of technical assistance to programs aimed at empowering caregivers and their children while building sustainability through the training of social workers and local volunteers. Each year, Jack collaborated with support group leaders in other regions of Ukraine to organize Camp OHALOW (Overcoming HIV and Leading Our World), a stigma-free summer camp that allows HIV-positive youth to build their support networks. Jack speaks Ukrainian and Russian, and at GHD is hoping to learn more about monitoring and evaluation in global health and education projects with a focus in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
