Rebecca Chamberlin joins GHD after serving through AmeriCorps as the Volunteer Coordinator at a non-profit organization in her hometown of Des Moines called Ethnic Minorities of Burma Advocacy and Resource Center which assists refugees living in Iowa. Prior to this position, Rebecca was an Environmental Action for Food Security Peace Corps volunteer in Benin from 2015-2017. She worked predominantly with female gardeners to improve their yields and resilience to climate change and provided training on nutrition and food preservation. She also implemented a chicken raising project in her village funded by a USAID Feed the Future grant. During her service, Rebecca was on Peace Corps Benin’s Food Security Committee, was the Content Coordinator for a local girls’ empowerment camp, and was the Logistics Coordinator for a co-ed camp focused on food security and youth leadership. She received her B.S. in Environmental Science and Global Resource Systems from Iowa State University in the spring of 2015. While at Iowa State she spent a summer in the Kamuli district of Uganda through Iowa State’s Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods. During her time there she taught biology and environmental science to middle-school aged students and worked to improve the school’s gardens in order to supplement their lunch program. The following summer she interned with the Fongoli Savanna Chimpanzee Project in Southeastern Senegal where she helped conduct research on human-wildlife conflict in the area. Rebecca speaks French and plans to specialize in Food, Agriculture, and Rural Livelihoods while in the GHD program.
