Dora Alicante was born and raised in Equatorial Guinea, West Central Africa, the country with the widest gap between per capita wealth and social and economic development in the world. One of the last in a family of thirteen children, she earned a BA in International Business and Economics from Oklahoma State University. She joins GHD following nearly a decade of Corporate Social Responsibility work for a multinational U.S. oil company in her country, a position that took her to the most remote areas of the country to support community development efforts, such as the founding of a women’s agricultural cooperatives and the building of schools. What Dora enjoyed most in this work was collaborating with local leaders to assess their resources, identify opportunities for development, and collaboratively make these a reality. Seeing the ways in which gender inequities and lack of opportunity for women and girls heighten economic disparities led Dora to Georgetown, where she is specializing in gender, community development, political economy, governance, and sub-Saharan Africa.
