Maruja MB Asis

Maruja MB Asis is the director of the Scalabrini Migration Center, a Manila-based research center dedicated to the study of migration in the Asia-Pacific region, and editor of the Asian and Pacific Migration Journal. She has longstanding experience in researching migration and social change in Asia, particularly the Philippine context. Her work on migration and development, migration and the family, and migration governance has contributed to public policy debates and the body of knowledge on migration. Among her recently completed research are explorations of Filipino father-carers in transnational families, agriculture as an alternative to international migration for young Filipinos, Southeast Asian fishermen on Taiwanese fishing vessels, and migration, slow-onset events and governance in Baguio City, Philippines. Her research experience is enriched by engagements in other arenas in the world of migration— dialogue with migration stakeholders, participation in expert group meetings and conferences on migration, and involvement in capacity training programs.
