Implementing a Project Focused on Private Sector-led Agribusiness Development
I worked this summer in Mozambique with TechnoServe, a nonprofit that supports business solutions to poverty. I was part of a team implementing a project focused on private sector-led agribusiness development. My primary deliverable included a comprehensive report summarizing key findings on program impact, success stories, and lessons learned to inform TechnoServe’s future engagement in the country. To this end, my responsibilities included: conducting research on the poultry and horticulture sectors in northern Mozambique; interviewing smallholder farmers and business owners on market challenges; and assessing program objectives using internal M&E tools and financial models, along with qualitative methods. Additionally, I presented to country leadership on how to measure supplementary impacts (food security and livelihoods metrics) beyond TechnoServe’s usual business indicators. This experience has helped me gain insight on challenges to measurement and implementation of agribusiness projects, particularly when operating in a context of conflict, mass displacement, and supply chain issues.
