During the summer of 2022, I interned with UNICEF’s Regional Office for South Asia in Kathmandu, Nepal. I worked with the Adolescent Skills and Employability (ASE) team to conduct a situation analysis of the impact of COVID-19 on youth in the region, with specific focus on their skills and employment prospects. Performing tasks such as literature review, data documentation, and labour markets analysis helped me develop a foundational understanding of the youth employment sector, while coordinating with global experts and field practitioners helped me gain diverse perspectives. I was able to apply concepts learned at GHD relating to development economics, program design, data analysis, and impact evaluation, to deliver two key outputs for UNICEF: a dashboard and a report manuscript on youth skills and employment in South Asia. Overall, the internship helped expand my horizons and make a strong foray into my area of interest – youth employment.
