Alexandra Muñoz
Class of 2020
Alexandra Muñoz joins the GHD program after 6 years of sustainable community development work in Ecuador. She served in the Peace Corps as the regional and programmatic leader for the Natural Resource Conservation Program and as a community development volunteer focused on women’s empowerment and environmental economics. Alexandra started a financial literacy program for rural women—resulting in the establishment of a community banking system and network for survivors of gender-based violence. She also partnered with the municipal government of Quito to develop efficient recycling systems that protect the dignity of the city’s waste-pickers. Upon completion of her service, Alexandra founded Fundación Kasa de Colores, a non-profit run by women with the goal of helping communities implement sustainable development solutions. Her organization has been recognized internationally for their efforts to build local economies through innovations in waste-management and sustainable agriculture. After the 2016 earthquake, Alexandra orchestrated aid efforts to provide relief services to 10 communities and helped local governments develop long-term strategies for environmental resilience and disaster mitigation. She holds a B.A. in Sociology with a minor in International Studies from Boston College, and is fluent in Spanish and studying French. Alexandra is interested in the intersection of climate change and human migration and hopes to explore the issue of environmental displacement within a development framework.
