Evaluating Innovative Literacy Programming in a West African School Network
This summer, Rinad Salaita and I interned with Rising Academy Network (RAN), a low-cost private school network in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Ghana. As the Process Evaluation Leads for RAN’s FasterReading program, we developed a data dashboard, conducted weekly data reports, outlined a Theory of Change, conducted and analyzed interviews with RAN staff, and analyzed videos of classroom program implementation. We developed several data collection tools. We learned how to code and upload the tools onto KoBo Toolbox for direct use in the field. As a result of data, interview, and video analyses, we were able to collect insights regarding the design and implementation of the FasterReading program and derive actionable recommendations for improving it in the future.
Our experience aligned with our interest in education and development and helped us grow our quantitative and qualitative analysis skills, in addition to our communication skills through regular team presentations.
