Engaging Young People: No Youth Programming without Young People as Partners
This summer I really enjoyed working with the International Youth Foundation—an international NGO headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. I worked with the Content Development specialist and Technical Advisor for Youth Agency to help develop a policy around the organization’s Youth Engagement strategies. Youth Engagement is a programming strategy that seeks to create more shared partnerships between adults and young people in the development of youth programming. Youth Engagement abides by the notion that programming “for young people should never be developed without young people.” While working remotely over Zoom came with challenges, I cherished the opportunity to learn about how large NGOs function internally. I was also able to minimally assist with IYF’s diversity and inclusion work. This was especially influential during this electric summer which will always be marked by the murder of George Floyd and the powerful Black Lives Matter protests that followed.
