Mapping Gender Data Gaps and Increasing Accessibility and Availability of Gender Statistics
Specializing in Gender and Labor Markets at GHD, it was incredible to work with the World Bank’s Group’s (WBG) Gender Data Team this summer! The team maintains the WBG’s Gender Data Portal which is a comprehensive open-data source for sex-disaggregated and gender-related data. The portal’s agenda includes data management, data journalism, storytelling, and visualization in order to make existing gender (and gender-data) gaps more visible to stakeholders. As a Gender Data Consultant, I supported the team with researching and mapping the availability of gender statistics across 217 countries’ National Statistical Office Databases; and produced an interactive map showing the findings using Flourish - a data visualization software. I also researched indicators for the expansion of the portal’s database, recommending 58 new indicators. This internship has been strategic in increasing my knowledge repertoire of gender data statistics and building my data visualization skills, and so will be more than helpful as I conduct future research on gender and labor market topics towards my specialization.
