Deepening Knowledge of Northeast China’s Social Issues
This summer I interned with the U.S. Consulate General Shenyang. Based in Northeast China, the Consulate serves Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang provinces. U.S. consulates are located throughout the world and support the needs of American citizens and U.S. companies abroad, as well as promote the diplomatic goals of the US government. I worked with the Political/Economic section, which focuses on the political and economic developments in Northeast China. My portfolio covered women’s rights, demographic issues, ethnic minorities issues, and LGBT+ rights. I provided the consulate with one-page briefings under these topics, such as the rise of feminism in the region. I also drafted internal documents, attended webinars to provide write-ups, and provided support where needed. The internship offered a clearer picture of a reporting officer’s responsibilities in a consulate or embassy.
